Caller ID & CNAM — Your Business Name on Every Call

When your team makes outbound calls, the person on the other end sees your business name and number — not a random cell phone or a generic "Unknown Caller." You control what shows up on caller ID for the entire company or set it per extension. Included at no extra charge.

  • Custom business name displayed on outbound calls
  • Set caller ID per extension or company-wide
  • CNAM registration in national database
  • Works on desk phones, softphones, and mobile app

How Caller ID Works With VoipPlus

Every outbound call from your system displays a caller ID number and a CNAM (Calling Name) entry. The number is whatever DID you assign to that extension — your main office number, a direct line, or a department number. The name is your business name as registered in the national CNAM database.

When you sign up, we register your business name against your phone numbers in the CNAM database. From that point on, anyone you call sees your company name on their phone screen instead of a random number. This matters — people answer calls from a recognized business name. They don't answer calls from numbers they dont recognize.

Flexible Configuration

Set Caller ID Your Way

Configuration What Shows on Caller ID Best For
Company-Wide Same business name and main number on all outbound calls Small offices where every call should come from the main line
Per Extension Each person's direct number shows as their outbound caller ID Sales reps, agents, or executives with their own direct lines
Per Department Department number shows (e.g., Sales shows sales line, Support shows support line) Businesses where callers should call back to the department, not an individual
Mobile App Business number shows even when calling from your personal cell phone Field workers, remote employees who want to keep their personal number private
STIR/SHAKEN Attestation

Your calls are signed with full STIR/SHAKEN attestation, which tells the receiving carrier that your caller ID is legitimate. This reduces the chance of your calls being flagged or labeled as "Spam Likely."

Personal Number Stays Private

When employees use the Android or iOS mobile app, the business number shows on caller ID — not their personal cell. Clients never see a private number.

Inbound Caller ID Too

Incoming calls display the caller's number and name (when available via CNAM lookup). Your team sees who's calling before they pick up, so they can answer professionally.

Why It Matters

Calls From Unknown Numbers Get Ignored

Studies show that most people won't answer a call from a number they don't recognize. If your outbound calls display "Unknown" or a number with no name attached, you're losing callbacks and first impressions. A properly configured caller ID with your business name means more answered calls, more returned calls, and a professional first impression every time.

This is especially important for sales teams, service businesses that call customers back, and anyone who relies on phone outreach to close deals or schedule appointments.

Common Questions

Caller ID FAQ

What is CNAM?

CNAM stands for Calling Name. It's the text that appears alongside your phone number on the recipient's caller ID display. We register your business name in the national CNAM database so it shows up when you call landlines and many cell phones.

Will my business name show on every call?

It shows on most calls. CNAM display depends on the receiving carrier — most landlines and many cell carriers show it, but some mobile carriers use their own caller ID databases. We register in the primary national database for maximum coverage.

Can different extensions show different caller IDs?

Yes. Each extension can have its own outbound caller ID number. Your sales team could show the sales line, your support team shows the support line, and your owner shows the main number. We set up whatever makes sense for your business.

How long does CNAM registration take?

CNAM updates typically propagate within 24-48 hours after we submit the registration. Some carriers may take longer to update their local caches.

Does caller ID work on the mobile app?

Yes. When you make calls through the VoipPlus mobile app, your business caller ID shows on the recipient's phone — not your personal cell number. Same professional appearance whether you're at the desk or on the road.

Is there an extra charge for caller ID?

No. Caller ID configuration and CNAM registration are included with every VoipPlus account. No setup fee, no monthly add-on.
